Alfred Ernest (Alf) Bauman was born January 3, 1920, at Chicago, Illinois, the son of Ernest and Emily (Langman) Bauman. He graduated from Chicago's Austin High School in 1938 where he and Bill de Correvont were celebrated members of the school football team. Austin won the Chicago Public League football championships in 1936 and 1937. Bauman entered Northwestern University in the fall of 1938.
